The Fyfe Ewing situation

Fyfe Ewing left Therapy? in 1996 after a gig in Dublin. It was announced that he left the drumming position because he couldn't handle the bands tight touring shedual. This has only recently been put straight, and the real news is out. Therapy? had a lot of success after "Troublegum" and this continued after their third album "Infernal Love". Frontman Andy Cairnes, had a lot of pressure on him and he felt he had to rise to rock-star status, when infact he was never ready. This led to a bad cocain habit which lasted almost a year. Bassist Michael McKeegan also felt the pressure, and this led him to alcohol. It seemed as if the band were going to split and rumours were flying round that Andy couldn't handle the band anymore. They went through some daft phases in this time, like wearing stick-on beards, frilly shirts and smoking jackets. In Andy's own words, "When I look back at that period, I see false moustaches, frilly shirts and too many drugs..." They put on a brave face for their fans, but something was badly wrong. Fyfe Ewing actually left because he couldn't be in the band with Michael and Andy anymore. It was a strain on their friendships and their potential to become a great band. In a way, this was the best possible move, because, it made Andy and Michael think. If Fyfe hadn't left, then I reckon Therapy? would have broken up altogether! As it happens, Andy shook his coke habit, Michael stopped drinking, they sorted their lives. Andy even got married in June 1997 and the band reformed as "Therapy? Mk2" as Michael put it.
